The Washington Demons downed Central Lee 14-4 in six innings of softball Tuesday night. The Washington lineup was red-hot, scoring two runs in the first inning and three in the third. After two more in the fourth, five runs in the fifth put the game out of reach for the Demons, who piled up a whopping 20 hits as a team.
Washington freshman Leighton Salazar had five of those knocks, including a double, and scored four runs from the leadoff spot. Sophomore Ella Greiner put up three hits and scored three runs from the two-hole, while senior Haley Mitchell and sophomore Alyvia Anderson also each cranked a double as part of two hits each, combining for three runs batted in and three scored.
Eighth-grader Colbie Greiner came up with three RBI, while sophomore Lauren Hinrichsen finished with three base hits, one run scored and two driven in. Fellow sophomore Kendall Hinirchsen added two hits and a run scored for the Demons, who improve to 17-10.
Washington baseball was not as fortunate, dropping a 4-3 contest at Central Lee Tuesday. The Demons carried a 3-2 lead into the fifth, but the Hawks scored twice in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good, causing the orange and black to lose for the 12th time in the last 14 games and drop to 4-15.
Both Washington teams hit the road tonight to complete a conference series with Keokuk. You can hear all the action between the Demons and the Chiefs in baseball on 106.1 FM KCII, with coverage starting on the Dino’s Pizza & Steakhouse Pregame Show at 7 o’clock this evening.
