The Sigourney Savages used a huge first inning to put away Tri-County softball before the game had barely started Friday night. All of Sigourney’s scoring in a 12-0 victory came in the opening frame, and junior Carly Goodwin pitched three perfect innings while striking out eight to help the conference-champion Savages remain undefeated in the South Iowa Cedar League.
At the plate, Goodwin finished with two hits, including a double, and three runs batted in. Junior infielder Erin Dawson also had a double as part of a pair of hits and put up four RBI. Senior Rain Barthelman and sophomore Ava Fisch each scored twice, while freshman Kenzi VanDenHeuvel drove in two runs to go with two scored.
Sigourney, ranked eighth in the state in Class 1A, improves to 18-4 overall. Savage baseball was not as lucky on the home turf Friday evening. Sigourney rallied from a 4-2 deficit in the middle innings to make it close, but Prairie City-Monroe got the 8-7 victory, dropping the Savages to 14-6.
