The Sigourney Savages finished off conference play with a pair of victories on the diamond against Iowa Valley last night. Sigourney softball raced out to a 4-0 lead after an inning of play and added three runs in the third and four more in the fourth for an 11-0 win.
Savage junior pitcher Carly Goodwin dominated every facet of the game. Along with a no-hitter and 10 strikeouts in the circle, one of Goodwin’s two hits was a home run on her way to three runs scored and four runs batted in.
Freshman shortstop Kenzi VanDenHeuvel also had two hits, including a double, and three RBI, while senior center fielder Courtney Helmsley swatted two triples and drove in two runs to help the South Iowa Cedar League champions finish a perfect 16-0 in the conference. The eighth-ranked team in Class 1A is now 21-4 overall.
Sigourney baseball also knocked off Iowa Valley last night 6-2. The Savages end conference play 13-1 and are 15-6 overall. Sigourney will next face Highland in baseball and Pekin in softball tonight.
