Area high school baseball teams are gearing up to begin the postseason, including the Sigourney Savages and Winfield-Mount Union Wolves, who both have first-round games tomorrow night.

Winfield-Mount Union is the number-five seed in Class 2A District 10 and will face Louisa-Muscatine in the first round tomorrow. The Wolves’ final game of the regular season was an 8-2 loss to the Falcons, but WMU possesses some firepower at the top of the lineup.

Junior pitcher Cael Phillips has put together a strong year on the mound as well, posting a 3.45 earned-run average to help Winfield-Mount Union win five games this season, all in conference play.

Sigourney was the runner-up in the South Iowa Cedar League this season and is the two seed in Class 1A District 10. The Savages have gone 17-6 behind a deep lineup. Senior Ty Shafranek and junior Jake Moore both have on-base percentages of better than .440 at the top of the order, and sophomore Caden Clarahan drives them with a .485 average, nine doubles, six home runs and 30 runs batted in.

Clarahan has also dominated on the bump, posting a 7-1 record and 1.22 ERA while piling up 83 strikeouts. Sigourney will host Danville in the first round of the playoffs. First pitch of the game for the Savages is 7 p.m. tomorrow, while Winfield-Mount Union starts tomorrow evening at 5 o’clock.
