The Sigourney Savages closed out the softball regular season with a hard-fought, 1-0 victory at Clear Creek Amana last night. In the ultimate pitcher’s duel, a single run in the sixth would prove to be the difference in giving Class 1A Sigourney a win over a Class 4A opponent .

Junior pitcher Carly Goodwin was again spectacular in the circle for Sigourney, allowing just two hits and racking up eight strikeouts in a complete-game shutout. Senior Rain Barthelman scored the Savages’ only run, driven in by freshman Kenzi VanDenHeuvel. Junior Ava Fineran had a team-high two of the lineup’s nine total hits.

Sigourney, ranked eighth in 1A, finishes the regular season with a record of 23-4 and will start the postseason tomorrow night by facing Holy Trinity Catholic in the 1A Region 8 quarterfinals.

Savage baseball found itself in a much stickier situation Saturday night to start the playoffs, as two-win Danville scored twice in the first inning of their 1A District 10 opener and broke a 3-3 tie with a run in the fourth. The Bears were still in front all the way until the seventh, when Sigourney scored twice to walk off and win 5-4.

Sophomore Brady Clark led the Savages with two hits, while sophomore Caden Clarahan and junior Jake Moore had one hit and one run scored each. Despite the scare, Sigourney improves to 18-6 and moves on to tomorrow night’s District 10 semifinals against Iowa City Regina.
