It will be a busy night at Schafer Field in Sigourney, as both the Savage baseball and softball teams are hosting playoff games tonight. Sigourney softball starts the postseason by facing Holy Trinity Catholic in the Class 1A Region 8 Quarterfinals this evening, while Savage baseball battles Iowa City Regina in the 1A District 10 semifinals.

Sigourney softball has looked the part of the eighth-ranked team in the state in 1A throughout the season, entering the playoffs with a 23-4 record. Junior pitcher Carly Goodwin has been one of the Savages’ key pieces, posting a 19-4 record in the circle and a minuscule 0.26 earned-run average while also racking up a whopping 260 strikeouts in 109 innings pitched.

Goodwin has also been a force with the bat, putting up a .475 batting average, eight doubles, three home runs, 39 runs batted in and 31 runs scored. But the junior is just one of a number of dangerous hitters in the Sigourney lineup. Sophomore Josephine Moore is hitting .557 with 12 doubles, a homer and 41 RBI, while freshman Kenzi VanDenHeuvel has four long balls as part of 16 total extra-base hits and a .453 average.

Mix in 39 runs scored at the top of the order from sophomore Ava Fisch and four other players hitting at least .300 with 17 or more RBI in junior Erin Dawson and seniors Macy Fisch, Rain Barthelman and Courtney Helmsely, and you can see why the Savages have been the second-best team in 1A in hitting and fourth in runs scored.

Sigourney baseball needed a walk-off to rally and avoid an upset against Danville in the first round in 1A District 10 Saturday, but the Savages have been excellent most of the season, finishing second in the South Iowa Cedar League and coming into tonight with a record of 18-6.

Sophomore Caden Clarahan has dominated both on the mound and at the plate. Along with a .486 batting average, Clarahan has hit nine doubles and six homers and has driven in 30 runs. Clarahan has also posted a 7-1 record and a 1.22 ERA on the bump, striking out 83 batters in almost 52 innings pitched.

While Sigourney baseball has not faced Regina in the last few years, the Savages defeated Holy Trinity Catholic in the softball playoffs last season. First pitch for both postseason matchups this evening is set for 7 o’clock.
