A former Washington Demon track and field star performed at one of the highest national levels in the sport last week. Lance Sobaski competed at this year’s USA Track & Field Under-20 Championships while representing his current team at Wartburg College. Sobaski was fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase last Saturday in Eugene, Oregon, finishing the race in nine minutes one second and finishing only 12 seconds behind winner Benjamin Balazs of the University of Oregon.
Sobaski has just finished his freshman season with the Wartburg Knights, earning two top-five finishes in distance races during the indoor season and another three top-fives in the outdoor season this spring.
Sobaski helped Washington finish fourth as a team at the 2022 Class 3A state championships, which included him taking home a fourth-place medal in the 3,200 meters and finishing sixth in both the 800 and 1,600. He also ran a leg on the distance medley team that was runner-up for the Demons.
