When the Sigourney Savages take the field in Fort Dodge this coming week at the Class 1A softball state championships, they’ll be looking to continue a proud tradition of success on the most-watched diamond in the state. Sigourney has made five previous trips to state in softball, and while they’ve yet to bring home a title, the Savages typically get good results on the state’s biggest stage.

Sigourney’s last trip to state two years ago began with a close game, as the Savages came up just short in a 9-6 final with Southeast Warren in the 2021 Class 1A quarterfinals. Sigourney did bounce back to win their consolation game 4-0 over North Butler, finishing the season with a record of 26-9.

After knocking off Akron-Westfield in the 1A quarterfinals in 2017, Sigourney lost a wild slugest to Clarksville 15-12 in the semis, resulting in the Savages going on to finish fourth at state. Sigourney also took fourth in 1A in 2001, and the Savages twice made the state tournament before schools were split into classes in 1978 and 1985, with the former run ending with the Black & Gold finishing sixth.

Eighth-ranked Sigourney can head towards their best-ever finish at state softball if they defeat number-two North Linn Tuesday night. You can hear every game the Savages play in Fort Dodge on KCII, including Tuesday night’s 1A quarterfinal against the Lynx starting at 6:30.
