We’re continuing our KCII Top 10 Countdown of the biggest Washington High School sports stories of 2022-2023. At number 9 is the Demon softball team having their winningest season in a decade.
With a 10-1 win over Central Lee in the Class 3A Region 8 quarterfinals on July 6th, Washington picked up its 24th win of the 2023 campaign. It’s the most victories in a single season for the Demons since they won 31 games and reached the 4A state championships in 2013.
The Demons put together a significant turnaround this summer, bouncing back from a 13-25 record in 2022 by winning 10 of their first 14 games this season and ultimately going 11-3 in the Southeast Conference.
Thanks in part to all-state freshman lead-off hitter Leighton Salazar and a breakout season for sophomore outfielder Ella Greiner, Washington scored the seventh-most runs in the state in 3A. While the Demons were defeated by second-ranked Davenport Assumption in the Region 8 semifinals, the Black & Orange still finish 11 games above .500 and will return all but one graduating senior in 2024.
The countdown of Top 10 Washington sports stories will continue tomorrow. Find the stories every day as they are announced at KCIIradio.com.
