We’re continuing our KCII Top 10 Countdown of the biggest Washington High School sports stories of 2022-2023. At number 2 is Demon girls’ golf taking fourth place as a team at the Class 3A state championships.

Not only did Washington reach the state tournament as a team for a 10th straight season, but the Demons brought home another Southeast Conference championship and won 11 of the 14 meets they played in this spring, including the first 10.

After bringing home the Class 3A Region 3 title from Oskaloosa to qualify for state, the Demons put up a team score of 341 strokes and were only nine back of first-place Gilbert after the first round May 25th. While they would not rally the following day to bring home their sixth state championship since 2007, Washington did still secure an eighth straight top-six finish in team scoring at the state meet.

Demon golfer Kaylin Long saved her best for last, as the senior nearly won the individual Region 3 title by shooting a season-best, seven-over-par round of 79 to finish just two strokes shy of winning. Long then fired an opening-round 78 in her first 18 holes at Pheasant Ridge Golf Course in Cedar Falls and came back with a second-round 79 to earn a tie for fourth overall at state.

Makenna Conrad would join fellow senior Long on the all-state team, finishing 12th at state and fourth in Region 3 as part of a final season where she had an average 18-hole score of just over 83. Freshman Adalyn Long, junior Maci Williams and seniors Haley Mitchell and Mallary Johnson also represented the Demons at state and were part of Washington being honored with the Distinguished Academic Award by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.

The countdown of Top 10 Washington sports stories will conclude with the number-one spot tomorrow. Find other stories from the countdown at KCIIradio.com.
