The sixth biggest story from Hillcrest Academy sports last year is brought to you by the number 38. The Ravens had a big year on the baseball and softball diamonds, landing in the top 10 in school history in 38 different statistical season and career categories. Twenty-four of those came from the Raven baseball team.

Senior Luke Schrock leads the way with 11 entrees in the school record book top 10. Schrock rocketed into the top 10 career list all-time at Hillcrest with a .397 batting average, ninth highest, 93 RBI, fourth most, 114 runs scored, third, five triples, fourth most, 23 doubles, sixth most, 120 hits, fifth most in 317 at bats, third most, and appeared in 105 games, fourth most. For single season top 10s, he struck out 120 batters on the mound ninth most, and recorded 12 doubles, fifth most.

Fellow senior Jace Rempel now appears in two different career top 10s and one season top list. Rempel finished his time at Hillcrest with 78 RBI, eighth most, and 16 doubles, ninth most. His 11 and two thirds innings this season without allowing an earned run is the most ever recorded by a pitcher in Raven history.

Senior Grant Bender has four top ten marks at Hillcrest. His four career triples are fifth in school history. All of those triples came in 2023, which ties him for the Raven record single season mark. His five homers this year are fifth most and his 39 RBI are sixth.

Two sophomores had seasons among the best in school history in 2023. Raven Liam Schrock is in five top season categories at Hillcrest. His two triples are third most in a season, six homers are fourth most, 29 walks fifth most, 21 stolen bases seventh most and 38 runs scored eighth most. Seth Ours finished eighth all time for Hillcrest hurlers with a 0.67ERA in 42 innings, his 37 runs scored this year are ninth all-time.

Raven manager Danny Hershberger was named Southeast Iowa Superconference North Division Coach of the Year for the second time in his career.

The Hillcrest baseball team were undefeated champions of the North Division of the SEISC, their first title in 14 seasons, district champions and finished with a 21-5 record, their most wins since 2009.

Fourteen top 10s were accomplished by the Raven softball team this year. Sophomore Delaney Shaw had a top 10 year in five different categories. Her .535OBP was third in school history, her 17 RBI fourth, nine doubles fifth, .431 average sixth and her .586 slug percentage was seventh.

Sophomore Malia Yoder also reached the top 10 in five stats. Her 2023 included 116 strikeouts in the circle, second in school history, her .533OBP was fourth, 23 runs scored were fifth, her seven pitching wins were seventh as were her 16 stolen bases.

Sophomore Morgyn Nafziger turned in a 2023 that saw her finish third all-time with 19 walks on the year and seventh with a .500OBP.

Sophomore Kylee Statler was fifth in Raven single season history with 16 RBI.

Hillcrest had seven wins this season, their highest total since 2016.
