The Associated Press has issued their first set of rankings for the Iowa High School football season with four schools from the KCII listening area recognized. Through week 1 contests, two 8-man teams are in the top six. The WACO Warriors are at No. 4 in the state this week. The Warriors, after a runner-up finish at the dome in 2022, came out Saturday and took care of business in the state capital with a hard fought 26-20 win over Freemont-Mills. The Knights are receiving votes in this week’s eight man poll. Next up for the Warriors is a Friday date with Iowa Valley at Roth Field in Wayland.

The Winfield-Mt. Union Wolves are No. 6 this week after a statement road win in week 1, knocking off fellow top 10 member Central City 44-36 Friday. The Wolves are back on the road this week when they travel to New London.

Two more teams in the listening area played up to open the season last week and both dropped contests, but remain in the receiving votes category of the polls in their classes. The Sigourney-Keota Cobras received votes in the 1A poll after a tough road loss at No. 5 in Class 2A Prairie City Monroe 22-15. SK’s next game is Friday against top 10 in 2A Mediapolis. The Columbus Wildcats are receiving votes in the Class A poll after dropping a game Friday to No. 6 in 2A MEPO 33-7. The Wildcats will look to rebound this week with a road trip to country rival Wapello.
