The Washington Demons came away with their first team victory of the cross country season yesterday, as the Washington boys won the team title at the Bob Brown Classic at Regina High School in Iowa City.
The Demons’ score of 65 points was 16 lower than second-place Solon and was largely paced by senior Micah Rees, who was also the individual boys’ champion with a top time of 16 minutes 10 seconds. It’s at least the sixth victory for Rees in the last two seasons.
But Rees also had teammates hot on his tail. Junior Tyler Alderton ran the course in 17:48 and finished eighth, while sophomore Andrew Rees crossed the finish line 11 seconds later to finish 10th and senior Lane Schrock came in 11th with a time of just over 18 minutes.
On the girls’ side, Washington finished fifth as a team but saw sophomore Iris Dahl take fifth place individually, clocking in at 21:13. Junior Lauren Horak was next for the Demons in 19th, while classmate Quincy Griffis finished 22nd. Washington has finished top five in the team scoring in both races to start the season and will look to keep that streak up when they next run Thursday at Fairfield.
