The biggest 8-man match-up in Iowa high school football in Week 3 is happening in Winfield tonight, live on the KCII3 stream when the Winfield-Mt. Union Wolves host the rival WACO Warriors.
WMU comes into the night with a 2-0 record after wins over No. 10 Central City and New London. WMU is ranked No. 4 this week in the latest Associated Press 8-man poll. Against New London, they led 72-0 after three quarters en route to a 78-16 win. Jake Edwards was seven of eight through the air for 210 yards and four scores. His top target was Cam Buffington with 140 yards on three catches that all went for touchdowns. Cole Milks had five carries for 170 yards and four touchdowns. Buffington also led the Wolves defense with nine stops while Kael Johnson recovered a fumble and Milks picked off a pass.
This year the Wolves are averaging 61 points and giving up 26 per game. WMU puts up 490 yards per game including 280 on the ground. Jake Edwards is 18 of 27 on the year for 422 yards with seven touchdowns and one interception. His favorite target is Buffington with six grabs for 221 yards all going for touchdowns. On the ground, Buffington has 229 yards on 20 carries with two touchdowns. Cole Milks has seven carries 178 yards and four scores. Buffington’s 24 and a half tackles leads the way. The Wolves defense has forced three turnovers.
The WACO Warriors are also 2-0 on the young season after victories over Freemont-Mills and Iowa Valley. The Warriors are ranked No. 2 in 8-man football in the latest poll from the Iowa Associated Press. In a 46-22 win over Iowa Valley, Clayton Miller had 209 all-purpose yards and four touchdowns. Louden Huisenga had 145 total yards with four touchdowns. He also led the defense with eight and a half tackles. The Warriors forced three turnovers, a fumble recovery for Miller and a pick each for Hunter Hughes and Chase Waterhouse.
This year, the Warriors average 36 points and give up 21 per game, putting up 326 yards including 204 on the ground per night. Individually, Miller is 17 of 23 through the air for 244 yards and four touchdowns. His favorite target is Huisenga with eight grabs for 106 yards and three touchdowns. Huisenga is also the leader on the ground with 37 carries for 217 yards and three more touchdowns. Colton Leichty has 15 and a half tackles, three for loss. Miller has a fumble recovery while Hughes, Miller, Leichty and Waterhouse have each picked off a pass.
The Warriors have won 11 of the last 14 in the series, including 43-0 in 2022. The Wolves last win was 42-28 in 2020.
