The Washington Demons are in position to earn a big conference victory in Week Three of the high school football season as Washington travels to face Southeast Conference rival Fairfield tonight in a game you can hear on KCII.

After falling on the road to Oskaloosa in the season opener, Washington responded beautifully last week in their first home game of the season, rallying from an early deficit to win convincingly over league rival Burlington 32-7.

The big story was once again the defense, which has allowed less than 260 yards per game in their first two contests. Senior defensive end Chase Greiner has been a terror for opposing quarterbacks with three sacks, while senior linebacker Casen Evans leads the team with 11-and-a-half tackles and senior lineman Nic Dittrich came up with a pair of sacks last week. Demons head coach Nick Ehret tells KCII Sports that last week’s game is actually great prep for his defense for tonight.

“That’s one of the positives of playing Burlington and Fairfield back-to-back,” Ehret says. “We’re seeing similar schemes [and] our schemes are going to be similar in terms of how we defend it. But it’s just going to all come down to [if we can] be physical up front and get guys to the ball and tackle well and keep our eyes where they need to be and not get burned on some counters or some play-action passes.”

The offense will hope for more explosive plays like the two touchdown passes quarterback Logan McDole threw to fellow junior Mason Morgan last Friday, which combined to cover 93 yards. Three of Morgan’s four receptions have gone for TDs, but Washington will try to pick up the pace running the ball, where they are averaging less than three yards per carry.

The Demons will try to slow down a Fairfield team that leans on the ground game. Junior running back Cason Miller has 236 yards and three scores running the ball while averaging over nine yards per rush.

Along with winning last year’s meeting 35-28, Washington has won 10 of the last 11 games versus Fairfield. You can hear all of the action as the Demons battle the Trojans this evening on 106.1 FM KCII, as well as streaming on KCIIradio.com and the KCII app. Pregame coverage begins tonight at 6:30.
