At Hillcrest Union in Kalona Tuesday night, the Winfield-Mt. Union Lady Wolves volleyball team scored a four set Southeast Iowa Superconference win over the home Ravens at Dwight Gingerich Court. The visitors from WMU took the contest by scores of 25-23, 23-25, 25-4 and 25-19. After the match, Winfield-Mt. Union seniors Audrie Gipple and Tessa Huston joined KCII sports to talk about key points in the contest, the team’s overall play and their individual performances. Huston said, “We do believe we could do better, but the outcome was good obviously. Third set tonight we talked. It brought us up, brought us together as a team. I felt like I hustled tonight. ”
Gipple added, “Coach has been talking about how to finish out games when we aren’t playing our best. We just kept our energy up and finished strong. We were loose and had fun when we were up and it felt like that really helped us. I feel like I was a reliable person tonight. If things weren’t going the way we planned I could get it in when we needed it.”
Stat leaders for the Wolves included Gipple with 14 kills and a perfect 27 of 27 from the service line with five aces, Aurey Meeker with 16 assists, Huston with 14 digs and Katie Miller with a pair of blocks. The Ravens were led by Malia Yoder with 23 digs and 14 kills, Claire Withrow with 10 assists and three aces, and Niva Helmuth with two blocks. The win moves the Wolves to 9-8, a perfect 3-0 in the Superconference. The Ravens fall to 5-6 overall and 1-3 in league play.
