The Winfield-Mount Union Wolves and WACO Warriors continued their undefeated start to conference volleyball play Thursday. Winfield-Mount Union knocked off Lone Tree in straight sets at home, winning 25-13, 25-15 and 25-16.
Sophomore middle hitter Quin Smith had a breakout night for the Wolves, leading the team with nine kills and a pair of blocked hits. Senior Kailey Neil was also good in the middle with four kills and two blocks.
WMU senior Tessa Huston finished with four kills, three serving aces and a team-high 12 digs, while senior outside hitter Audrie Gipple put up eight kills and a pair of aces and senior setter Aurey Meeker dished out 18 assists to go with two kills and three aces. Winfield-Mount Union is now 4-0 in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference and 10-8 overall, while Lone Tree falls to 1-11, with the only win in conference play.
WACO is also off to a 4-0 start in the Super Conference after surviving a five-set thriller at Pekin Thursday night. The Panthers won the first set 25-20, and after the Warriors took the next two frames 25-18 and 25-15, Pekin kept the match alive by winning the fourth set 25-19. WACO put together a solid final set and won 15-8 to survive a tough road test.
Junior middle blocker Ally Rinner led the Warriors with 10 kills and two blocks. Senior Emma Wagler finished with nine kills and four aces, while freshman Brenna Graber made a splash with five kills and a team-high 24 digs.
Senior setter Meredith Roth added 24 assists, four aces and 12 digs for WACO, which is now 9-2. The Warriors join Winfield-Mount Union and Lone Tree in taking time off before playing in the Super Conference Tournament starting this Thursday.
