The Sigourney Savages found a way to win a close conference volleyball battle at home Monday night against English Valleys. After Sigourney took the first set 26-24, English Valleys claimed the next two frames 25-19 and 25-18. But the Savages rallied, winning the fourth set 25-17 and taking the decisive fifth frame 15-8.
Senior outside hitter Amiya Smallwood led Sigourney with 12 kills and 22 digs. Junior McKinley Chittick also had 12 kills and blocked one shot, while fellow middle Reagan Clarahan finished with eight kills and three blocks.
Junior hitter Josephine Moore had a strong night with nine kills and 17 digs, while senior setter Ava Fineran handed out 31 assists to go with two kills, a serving ace and seven digs. The win helps the Savages improve to 4-1 in the South Iowa Cedar League and 9-5 overall.
The Keota Eagles were not as fortunate, falling Monday in straight sets to conference rival Belle Plaine 25-13, 25-15 and 25-23. The Eagles drop to 1-4 in league play and 6-7 overall. While Sigourney is off until Thursday’s match with Montezuma, Keota is taking part in the Lone Tree Invitational this week.
