The Washington Demons continued their dominant cross country season Tuesday, and this time in front of their own cheering fans. Washington won both the boys’ and girls’ team championships at their home meet, as the Demon boys were 14 points better than Fort Madison and the girls edged Marion by four points at the Washington Invitational.
Senior Micah Rees also kept up his dominant season by winning the boys’ 5k at Washington Golf & Country Club, blowing well past his own school record by crossing the finish line in almost 15 minutes 50 seconds. Junior teammate Tyler Alderton finished third in 16:44, while sophomore Andrew Rees ran a personal-best time of 17:12 to earn sixth place.
Senior Lane Schrock was 16th for Washington, while sophomore Sawyer Tschantz rounded out the top 20. Senior Andrew Shepherd missed out that group by one spot but still contributed to keeping the Demons perfect in team competition.
Sophomore Iris Dahl had the best time for the Washington girls by finishing third in 20 minutes 25 seconds. But where the Demons did their most damage as a team was in a pack inside the top 15. Freshman Emma Horak ran a season-best time of just under 21:44 to finish ninth, while junior Quincy Griffis crossed the finish line six seconds later to complete the top 10.
Sophomore Angeline Anderson came across seven seconds later and junior Alyvia Anderson was next in 12th, with juniors Kendall Hinrichsen and Isabella Lujan finishing 15th and 16th, respectively, to give Washington their fourth team title of the season.
Other area runners put together strong showings Tuesday. Lone Tree junior Vivian Zaruba finished inside the girls’ top 30 with a time of 23:46, while freshman Brock Nebergal led the Lion boys in 19:47.
WACO’s best time belonged to junior Keiran Luitjens at 19:37, while the Warrior girls were headlined by junior Justine Lynn at 26:57. Senior Halle Hazelett led the Highland girls in 25:22, while the Husky boys were paced by senior Jackson Schneider in 23:12.
