A 24-year-old Washington Man has been charged with Homicide by Vehicle and Serious Injury by Vehicle for his role in a crash in Iowa City on August 7th. In Court documents filed Wednesday, Drake Brezina was seen by a traffic camera holding his phone in front of his face when he ran a red light, hitting a vehicle broadside driven by 30-year-old Kristina Pearson of Wellman, killing her, and seriously injuring her passenger. Traffic camera video shows Brezina’s vehicle entering the intersection 15 seconds after the light turned red. A search warrant to receive Event Data Recorder Information showed he was traveling 44 mph in a 35 mile per hour zone at the time. In a statement, Brezina admitted to responding officers that he ran the light because he was distracted. Police reports using data from Brezina’s phone show he was actively sending and receiving messages over social media apps near the site of the crash. The incident occurred at the intersection of Highway 6 E and Boyrum Street in Iowa City, Brezina was arrested early Friday morning and released to the Department of Correctional Services for “pretrial supervision” the same day. Arraignment and other court dates have yet to be set.
