The Columbus Wildcats kept cruising on the football field Friday night with a 70-14 homecoming victory over Louisa-Muscatine. Columbus did half their scoring in the first quarter and never looked back from a 35-0 lead.
Columbus had a huge night running the ball, piling up 300 yards on only 13 attempts. All-state senior Kaden Amigon needed only three carries to rush for 127 yards and two touchdowns, while junior Riley Kaalberg had eighty yards and two TDs on just four rushes.
Both of sophomore Angel Venzor’s runs went for scores and covered 70 yards, while sophomore quarterback Trevor Phillips completed seven of nine pass attempts for 125 yards and two touchdowns, with senior Cael Phillips catching four of those passes for 86 yards and a TD.
Sophomore Elliot Wessley led the defense with eight-and-a-half total tackles, while Amigon had 3.5 tackles for a loss and a sack. Senior Russel Coil also had three stops for loss for the Wildcats, which gave up 24 points or less for a fourth time this season. Columbus wins its third straight to improve to 4-1 in Class A District 6 and 4-2 overall ahead of facing Van Buren County in Week Seven.
