Winfield-Mount Union lived up to its number-one ranking in the state in 8-man football by rolling past Iowa Valley 76-14 Friday night. The Wolves raced out to a 22-0 lead by the end of the first quarter and led by 38 points at halftime in preserving their undefeated season with authority.
All-state senior Cam Buffington had another big night, rushing for 215 yards and two touchdowns on just seven carries on offense and also leading the defense with 13 total tackles and three tackles for loss.
But plenty of other players also played very well for WMU. Senior running back Cole Milks had nine rushes for 90 yards and three touchdowns while also tying Buffington with a team-high 13 tackles. Junior quarterback Jake Edwards threw four TD passes, two of them to senior Carter Loyd covering 49 yards total, and one each to Abram and Max Edwards.
Junior Cooper Buffington added two sacks for the defense as Winfield-Mount Union, in addition to moving to 6-0 overall, wraps up the regular-season championship in District 6 and an automatic bid to the state playoffs. The Wolves next face Mormon Trail this coming Friday.
