The Washington Demons made it a happy homecoming Friday by defeating their rivals from Mount Pleasant 42-7 in Week Six of the high school football season. Washington wasted little time taking command, needing only six plays to drive 70 yards for the game’s first score when quarterback Logan McDole found fellow junior Jayfred Espinosa for a 25-yard touchdown pass to wrap up their opening possession.

The fast start was just beginning for the Demons, who scored a TD on four of their first five possessions. After a long run by sophomore Kael Williams set up an 8-yard scoring run, a trick play allowed receiver Mason Morgan to throw a 50-yard touchdown pass to McDole. Late in the first half, McDole completed a screen pass on fourth down to junior Conner Leyden, which he raced 43 yards to the end zone to make it a 28-0 lead heading into halftime.

Washington would get another TD run from Williams and a scoring rush by Casen Evans in the second half to round out the scoring. On a night where the Demons had season highs in both points scored and total yards, Williams put together a big night with 152 yards on 15 carries. After the game, he told KCII Sports the team did exactly what it had planned to do coming in.

“We’ve been in kind of a slump lately, not playing good football,” Williams said, “and we finally got out of it thanks to our [offensive] line. It all starts up front. The big dudes did good tonight.”

The Washington defense limited Mount Pleasant to just 133 yards gained. Head coach Nick Ehret said the Demons were ready to face the Panthers and take away their strengths.

“We knew they were big up front [and] we knew they were going to try to run some power at us,” Ehret said. “That was something we worked on all week, and, finally going back to [how we played against] Burlington, we really controlled the line of scrimmage [and] we were able to gang tackle. We got a lot of guys to the ball tonight and really stuffed that.”

With the homecoming victory, Washington ends a three-game losing streak and moves to 2-2 in the Southeast Conference, 1-1 in Class 3A District 4 and 2-4 overall. The Demons will next face Davenport Assumption. You can hear the game this coming Friday night with pregame starting at 7 on KCII.
