The results of the 2023 Spring ISASP tests were released in August by the Iowa Department of Education. Among the successes seen in the Highland Community School district, math scores were the most noticeable.

Among the 373 students tested across Highland Elementary, Middle School, and High School, more than 70 percent demonstrated proficiency in math. This is more than five points higher than the statewide average of 69.6. Six of the nine grade levels tested showed proficiency levels of 75 percent or more.

In English/language arts, Highland’s 68.5 percent proficiency rate was just short of the state average of 71.4. While only fifth, eighth, and tenth-grade students were tested in science, Highland was again just below the state average with 58.4 percent of students showing proficiency.

This year’s freshman provided plenty of highlights, as the class performed above the state average in all three tests. Other top proficiency rates included seventh, ninth, and tenth-grade ELA, all above 73 percent.
