The Sigourney Savages scored another conference volleyball victory Monday by winning at Lynnville-Sully in straight sets, but it wasn’t a walk in the park. After Sigourney won the first set 25-19, the Savages had to stave off Lynnville-Sully over two close final frames, but they found a way to win both, 25-21 and 26-24.
Senior outside hitter Amiya Smallwood led Sigourney with 12 kills and added 18 digs, while junior Josephine Moore added nine kills, two serving aces and 17 digs. Senior defensive specialist Chelsey Pfannebecker had a big night on the back row with four aces and 24 digs, while senior setter Ava Fineran added a kill, an ace and 10 digs to the 14 assists she handed out.
The Savages win their third straight match to improve to 6-1 in the South Iowa Cedar League and 11-5 overall. Keota was not as fortunate Monday, falling in straight sets at North Mahaska, 25-18, 25-15 and 25-23. The Eagles drop to 1-6 in conference play and 7-11 overall. While Keota will next face Lynnville-Sully Thursday, Sigourney will take on Colfax-Mingo tomorrow.
