Three area high school volleyball teams look to continue their success and get another playoff win, as the Sigourney Savages, WACO Warriors and Keota Eagles play in region quarterfinals tonight.

Sigourney will be the lone member of the group at home this evening when they take on conference rival Belle Plaine in the Class 1A Region 5 quarterfinals. The Savages defeated Montezuma in the first round Monday, winning in straight sets thanks largely to junior Reagan Clarahan’s big night in the middle with eight kills and three blocked shots.

Clarahan has 124 kills and 48 blocks total for the season, while senior Amiya Smallwood and junior Josephine Moore have combined for almost 280 kills and 470 digs to help Sigourney go 16-8 this season. The Savages will try to take down a Belle Plaine team that is 19-13 and has already won once against Sigourney, but the Plainswomen barely escaped the Savages with a five-set thriller that was decided by two points in the final frame back on September 21st.

WACO will go on the road and look to defeat Central City in the Class 1A Region 7 quarters. The Warriors worked past Iowa Valley in straight sets Monday, 25-21, 25-23 and 25-19, with senior middle blocker Emma Wagler again leading the way with 11 kills and two blocks.

Along with Wagler’s 176 kills, 35 aces and 35 blocks, senior setter Meredith Roth has been a steady conductor of the WACO engine with 476 assists, 40 aces and 164 assists. The Warriors are facing a Central City team that is 23-11.

Keota will also look to earn a road victory in 1A Region 7 when they travel to face North Tama. The Eagles held on to win a five-set thriller Monday against Lone Tree, with senior Cassie Swantz delivering another brilliant all-around performance with 12 kills, 17 assists, six aces and nine digs.

Swantz has 63 kills, 141 assists, 47 aces and 206 digs for the Eagles, who are 10-13. Keota will try to conquer a North Tama team that is 23-15 and ranked fifth in the state. First serve for all regional quarterfinals this evening is 7 o’clock.
