Week Nine of the high school football season will serve as the finale of the 2023 campaign for the Washington Demons, as Washington celebrates Senior Night at Case Field tonight by hosting conference rival Fort Madison in a game you can hear on KCII.
Washington enters the game with a 2-6 record and is coming off back-to-back losses. The Demons lean on running back Kael Williams carrying the ball, as the sophomore has a team-high 553 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground. Junior wide receiver Mason Morgan has also been a big-play target with 17 catches for over 300 yards and four TDs.
The Demon defense has been led by its linebackers. Seniors Casen Evans, Alec Ulin and Chase Greiner lead the team in tackles, while senior defensive tackle Nic Dittrich has been plugging holes up front. Washington head coach Nick Ehret tells KCII Sports that winning the battle at the line of scrimmage continues to be their top priority.
“It starts up front,” Erhet says. “We’ve got to be good up front. We knew the last three weeks were going to be the toughest part of our schedule, but a lot of it is just executing. We’ve got to execute up front, we’ve got to tackle well on defense [and] we’ve got to find some ways to get our playmakers the ball, open up some creases and get our receivers in space.”
The Demons will be facing the now-back-to-back Southeast Conference champions in Fort Madison, who are 5-3 and gunning for a playoff spot. The Bloodhounds look to the leadership of junior quarterback Marcus Guzman, who has thrown for over 1,200 yards and eight touchdowns while also leading the team with over 480 yards and four TDs rushing. Senior Ike Thacher has also been a force on defense with 11-and-a-half tackles for loss.
Washington has lost back-to-back meeting with Fort Madison. The Demons will try to finish their season by beating the Bloodhounds, and you can hear all the action from Case Field this evening on 106.1 FM KCII, as well as streaming on KCIIradio.com and the KCII app. Pregame coverage starts at 7 o’clock.
