Welcome sign along Highway 21 in What Cheer, Iowa.

On October 30, a lawsuit was filed against a Keokuk County family after a hay rack ride event left several middle-school aged children injured.

The incident in question occurred near What Cheer on Saturday, October 14 when a pickup pulling a trailer for a hayride rode into a ditch, throwing several riders off. Multiple injuries were reported, requiring medical attention.

The suit charges negligence against the event’s organizers, Victoria and David Heady, along with the driver of the ride, Dan Brubaker. It was filed by the family of a 12-year-old girl who was left with “life-altering” injuries from the crash, according to court documents.

In addition to the lawsuit, David Heady, who served as a Keokuk County Deputy, resigned from his position at the Board of Supervisors meeting on October 30. KCII will have more information as it becomes official.
