The Highland Huskies and Lone Tree Lions both got their new high school girls’ basketball seasons off to good starts, as both teams won a pair of games Friday and Saturday at the Four Corners Shootout in Riverside.

Highland got the season underway by defeating Keota Friday, breaking open a tie game after one quarter with a 12-2 run to lead 23-13 at halftime and then cruising in the second half to defeat the Eagles 51-26.

The Huskies’ Sarah Burton had a brilliant all-around season debut, leading the team with 18 points and also finishing with eight rebounds, five assists, four steals and two blocked shots. Fellow senior Stella Slaymaker added a double-double with 10 points and 15 rebounds.

Highland kept rolling the following day, using a huge 21-3 run in the second period against Iowa Valley to take a 27-10 lead at the half. While the Tigers would rally with a 16-6 run in the fourth quarter, the Huskies held on for a 44-40 victory.

Burton again paced Highland with 18 points and added seven rebounds, three assists, five steals and three blocks. Slaymaker finished with four points and a team-high nine rebounds, while freshman Hailey Brun came off the bench to put up eight points and four boards.

Lone Tree joins Highland with a 2-0 start to the season. The Lions used a 14-5 run in the final period to pull away from Iowa Valley and win 50-39 Friday, then a 14-2 run going into the break stretched their halftime lead against Keota to 33-11 the following day, leading to a 59-27 win.

While Lone Tree will be back in action tomorrow against Winfield-Mount Union, Highland is off until they face Belle Plaine and 0-2 Keota will next take on Lousia-Muscatine next Monday.
