A new season of high school girls’ wrestling began for WACO and Highland/Washington this weekend, as both teams competed Saturday at the BGM Tournament, where the Huskies finished fourth in the team scoring and the Warriors tenth.
Highland/Washington came 55 points shy of Des Moines Valley West for the team title thanks to a number of excellent individual performances. Junior Lilly Barre and freshman Chloe Sexton both brought home individual championships, with Barre winning at 120 pounds with two pins and an 11-0 major decision and Sexton using a pair of pins to win at 190.
Husky seniors Abbie Grout and Angeline Roling were runners-up at 100 and 110 lbs, respectively, while junior Jaydee Macareno was fourth at 135 and junior Peggy Miller defeated senior teammate Jenna Bose to finish fifth at 155.
WACO was led by junior Rylee Rice, who pinned all three of her opponents to win the title at 110. Junior Elyssa Graber and freshman Macy Bonebrake took second at 105 and 190, respectively, while Cayten Coakley beat fellow junior teammate Athena Flores for fifth place at 120. Junior Emma Szewczyk rounded out the Warriors’ day in Brooklyn by finishing seventh at 155.
