A new season of Washington Demon girls’ basketball tips off tonight when Washington travels to take on Muscatine, and you can hear all the action from the Demons’ season opener this evening on KCII. Washington went 7-14 last season under head coach Shannon Rugg, winning six of their first nine games but struggling to capitalize on that strong start after New Year’s Day.

With five freshmen on the roster last season, the Demons will be a young team that is continuing to grow this year. One of those now-sophomores is point guard Adalyn Long, who led the team in scoring and three-point shooting by averaging just over nine-and-a-half points per game while hitting better than 31 percent of her attempts from beyond the arc.

Also back are junior guards Kendall and Lauren Hinrichsen, who combined to average 6.5 points and four rebounds per contest. Senior forward Maci Williams will be a key figure in the low post after she led the team in overall field-goal percentage and averaged more than three points and 2.5 rebounds a game off the bench last season.

Washington is facing a former Southeast Conference rival in Muscatine, who had their own struggles last season with a record of 4-18. The Demons have lost seven straight to the Muskies, including a 44-24 defeat in the last meeting in January of 2020.

Washington starts the new season against Muscatine this evening, and coverage on 106.1 FM KCII as well as streaming on KCIIradio.com and the KCII app begins with the Countdown to Tip-Off at 6:30.
