The Winfield-Mount Union Wolves got a new season of high school boys’ basketball started right, as WMU defeated conference rival Louisa-Muscatine 50-27 Tuesday night in Letts. The Wolves raced out of the gates with a 15-3 advantage after one quarter and never looked back, leading by 13 points at halftime and using a 12-2 run in the third quarter to take complete control.

Senior forward Abram Edwards paced Winfield-Mount Union with a huge game in the paint, piling up 24 points, 17 rebounds and four blocked shots. Junior guard Jake Edwards hit a trio of three-pointers and finished with 13 points, four rebounds and five assists. Senior guard Carter Loyd also had five assists and put up six points and three rebounds.

The WMU girls did not have the same luck Tuesday evening, falling to Louisa-Muscatine 45-27. Already down by nine at the end of the first quarter, a 10-4 increased the Wolves’ deficit to 27-12 at the half, and the Falcons would build the lead to as large as 25 in the third period.

Sophomore Madisen Kellogg led Winfield-Mount Union with 12 points and seven rebounds off the bench, while junior Pacey Schlee hit three triples on her way to nine points, three rebounds and four assists, but the Lady Wolves still fall to 2-2. Both WMU teams next play Friday when they visit another foe from the Southeast Iowa Super Conference in Pekin.
