The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk boys and girls basketball teams welcome the Northeast Goose Lake Rebels to Wellman Saturday for a River Valley Conference doubleheader. The Golden Hawk boys are 0-1 on the season after a 54-42 setback against Benton Tuesday night in Wellman. The Golden Hawks shot 30% from the floor, 13% from long range and 88% at the line. They pulled in 34 rebounds, winning the state by nine, dished out 10 assists, and had eight steals, but committed 26 turnovers. Landon Sullivan scored a career high 16 points, Brady Weber and Dylan Henry each had eight boards, Weber added four assists.
Northeast opened the season Tuesday, pummeling Durant 66-34. The Rebels shot 46% from the floor, 24% from deep and 67% at the line with 37 boards, 19 assists, 16 steals and just seven turnovers. Gavin Kramer had a monster 24 points, nine board day while Colby Gray and Jacob Tegeler each added 11 points. Mid-Prairie has won four straight in the series including a 62-39 victory last season.
The Golden Hawk girls are 2-1 after a bounceback, wire-to-wire win Friday at Anamosa 69-30. This year, they’re scoring 65 points per game and giving up 45, shooting 44% from the floor, 30% from three and 40% at the line with 26 boards, 11 assists, 13 steals and 16 turnovers per game. Individual leaders include Callie Huber with 13 points and nine boards per night, Nora Pennington with five steals and Katelyn Harland with four assists.
The Rebel girls are 2-0 this year after squeaking by Durant 48-45 Tuesday and Alburnett Thursday 44-40. Northeast scores 46 per game and gives up 43, shooting 32% from the floor, 30% from downtown and 55% at the line to go with 32 boards, 11 assists, 12 steals and 15 giveaways per game. Individually, Emma Kjergaard and Leah Mangelsen each average 13 points per game. Mangelsen has a team best seven boards per night while Kjergaard leads with three assists and three steals per outing. Mid-Prairie has won seven of the 10 all-time meetings between the schools, but it was the Rebels scoring a 58-48 win a season ago. Action starts at 1:30 this afternoon and continues through the afternoon and evening at Tim Grady Gymnasium in Wellman.
