Sigourney-Keota boys’ wrestling put together a strong showing in its first tournament of the season Saturday, finishing fourth in the team scoring at the 59th Willard Howell Invitational in Wapello.

The best individual finish for SK belonged to Jake Moore, who won a 7-0 major decision in the semifinals at 165 pounds before losing a 12-2 major decision in the championship bout. Fellow senior Hunter Sieren was third at 175 lbs, as were juniors Brady Clark and Ashton Schwab at 138 and 157, respectively.

Zach Guffey took fifth at 285 lbs for Sigourney-Keota, while four other wrestlers had fourth-place finishes, including freshman Jack Greiner at 106; senior Carter Wyatt at 144; sophomore Jacob Libe at 150; and sophomore Owen Menke at 190. Freshman Rex Flynn and junior John Wheeldon were sixth at 120 and 215, respectively, to round out the SK medalists.

Highland ended up ninth in the boys’ team standings, with senior Luke Guseman’s runner-up honors at 126 lbs being their best individual finish. Senior Remington Fields was sixth at 150 lbs, while the Huskies got fifth-place finishes from freshman Tyler Pierson at 120; sophomore Brock Thomann at 132; and junior Isaac Kleese at 175.

The girls’ competition was highlighted by Sigourney-Keota’s Reanah Utterback claiming another tournament title. After winning the championships at Central Elkader at 115 lbs, the junior did it again in Wapello, winning a technical knockout by a 17-0 score and pinning her final two opponents.

The Highland Huskies had the best team performance in the second annual Willard Howell Girls’ Invitational, finishing sixth in scoring. Senior Angelina Roling was the runner-up at 110 lbs after pinning her first two opponents and getting pinned in the final, as was freshman Chloe Sexton at 190.

Junior Josie Nelson and sophomore Quinn Smith led Columbus/Winfield Mount Union with third-place finishes at 140 and 130, respectively, while senior Lecet Quiroz was fourth at 155. WACO was led by junior Rylee Rice taking third at 110.
