The Winfield-Mount Union boys’ basketball team suffered its first loss of the season Saturday by falling to Illini Bluffs of Illinois in the Iowa/Illinois Shootout at Central Lee High School in Donnellson. WMU had a 13-8 lead in the first quarter but fell behind by five at halftime. The Wolves cut the deficit down to two points heading into the final period, but despite hanging tough in a defensive final eight mintues, they were on the wrong end of a 10-5 run to close the game.
Junior guard Jake Edwards had a big offensive day for Winfield-Mount Union, hitting seven of 10 field-goal attempts and knocking down four three-pointers on his way to scoring a team-high 18 points. Forward Abram Edwards finished with 13 points, five rebounds and five assists, while fellow senior Carter Loyd added 10 points and eight boards, but the Wolves nonetheless fall to 2-1. Both the boys and girls are in action for WMU tonight at WACO.
