A pair of the top teams in the North division of Southeast Iowa Super Conference basketball came away with more conference victories Friday night. That includes the Highland girls defeating Pekin 36-11 in Packwood, as the Huskies were able to keep the lead most of the night in a low-scoring game but truly put away victory by finishing the game on an 11-0 run.

Senior Sarah Burton team highs of 12 points, four rebounds, four assists and two blocks, while freshman Katelyn Thomann hit three three-pointers and also blocked two shots to help Highland improve to 3-1 in the Super Conference North and 6-1 overall.

The Highland boys would fall 75-14 to Pekin, trailing 18-4 after one quarter and seeing the deficit swell to 32 points by halftime. The Huskies never recovered and thus remain winless so far this season.

The Winfield-Mount Union boys came away with a 53-31 win Friday over Wapello. After a three-point lead in the quarter and a 23-15 advantage at halftime, the Wolves used a 20-9 run in the third quarter to pull away for good. Carter Loyd knocked down four triples on his way to a team-high 16 points for WMU, while fellow senior Cam Buffington finished with 15 points, five rebounds and four assists.

Senior forward Abram Edwards added eight points, 15 boards, four assists and four blocked shots to help the Wolves stay unbeaten in conference action and raise their overall record to 4-1. The Winfield-Mount Union girls were not as fortunate, falling victim to a 16-7 run at the end of the game that allowed Wapello to win 53-38 and kept them winless in league play along with an overall record of 2-5.
