The Washington Demons earned a girls’ basketball victory over their rivals from Mount Pleasant Friday night 66-40 at home. Washington jumped out to a 22-4 lead and never looked back, leading by 20 points at halftime.
Sophomore Adalyn Long had a big night shooting the basketball, hitting five three-point shots and scoring a game-high 25 points. Demons head coach Shannon Rugg praised his point guard after the game with KCII Sports.
“She’s a girl that puts a lot of time and effort in to the gym,” Rugg said. “She got on a little bit of a roll there, and when she gets on a roll, it really opens things up for us.”
Junior guard Lauren Hinrichsen also hit a pair of threes and finished with a career-high 12 points, while junior Kendall Hinrichsen added 10 points to help Washington win its third straight and improve to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in the Southeast Conference.
The Demon boys would not have the same good fortune, falling to Mount Pleasant 70-53. Washington trailed most of the night, seeing a five-point deficit in the first quarter nearly double by the half. The Demons would not be able to rally past the dynamic duo of senior Payton Hagans and sophomore Christian Stacy, who each scored at least 25 points for the Panthers.
Kael Williams paced Washington with 13 points scored, while fellow sophomore Drew Conrad had 12 and Rajan Roth finished with 10. The Demons drop to 1-2 in conference play and 3-4 overall. Both Washington teams are in action this weekend against Williamsburg.
