Both the Winfield-Mount Union Wolves and Highland Huskies came away with victories in the boys’ halves of their basketball doubleheaders Saturday. Winfield-Mount Union’s nine-point lead in the first quarter over Holy Trinity Catholic shrunk to just two points by halftime, but after reclaiming the lead entering the final period, the Wolves closed the game on a 19-8 run to secure a 55-40 win.

Cam Buffington led WMU with 20 points scored and also had eight rebounds and four assists. Fellow senior Abram Edwards finished with 13 points and nine rebounds, while senior guard Carter Loyd hit a pair of three-pointers on his way to 12 points and five assists. Junior Jake Edwards added eight points, four boards, three dimes and three blocked shots to help the Wolves improve to 7-1.

Highland earned its first win of the boys’ basketball season Saturday by taking down English Valleys 49-46. Juniors Logan McFarland and Colten Sypherd scored nine points each to lead the Huskies, with McFarland adding seven rebounds and three steals. Senior Nic Oriano added eight points and nine rebounds as Highland raises its record to 1-6.

The Husky girls were not as fortunate, taking a 54-50 loss at home to English Valleys. Despite building a 16-5 lead by the end of the first quarter, Highland saw the game flipped on its head by a huge second period for English Valleys, and after the Bears led 33-25 at the halftime break, they would never relinquish that advantage, even as the Huskies closed the game on a 14-9 run.

Senior Sarah Burton had a monster game for Highland with 22 points, a whopping 21 rebounds and five blocked shots. Unfortunately, no other player on the team scored more than six points as Highland drops to 7-3.

The Winfield-Mount Union girls fell behind Holy Trinity 29-5 and went on to suffer a 68-15 defeat. Sophomore Madisen Kellogg had eight points and five rebounds, but the Wolves still fall to 3-7. WMU and Highland will meet tonight in a Southeast Iowa Super Conference hoops doubleheader.
