WACO’s Rylee Rice and Sigourney-Keota’s Reanah Utterback were the big winners of another busy weekend for local high school wrestling teams, as both juniors grabbed individual tournament championships Saturday at the Chariton Invitational. Rice pinned all three of her opponents to win the crown at 110 pounds to raise her record to 16-6, while Utterback did the same at 115 to remain undefeated this season.
While SK was 13th in the team scoring at Chariton, WACO finished 10th in the team standings thanks to juniors Elyssa Graber and Emma Szewczyk also making the medal stand, as Graber was third at 105 lbs and Szewczyk finished fifth at 155.
Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union and Highland also competed in girls’ wrestling Saturday at the Prairie Winter Classic in Cedar Rapids. Columbus/WMU got three grapplers to the medal stand, as junior Josie Nelson took fifth at 140 lbs; senior Lecet Quiroz was sixth at 155; and sophomore Jana Isanta claimed eighth place at 120. Highland got seventh-place finishes from junior Peggy Miller at 155 lbs and freshman Chloe Sexton at 190.
The best team finish of the weekend belonged to the Sigourney-Keota boys, who were seventh at the Regina Invitational in Iowa City. Junior Brady Clark had the best individual finish for SK by taking fourth at 138 lbs while freshman Jack Greiner was fifth at 106 and senior Hunter Sieren and junior Zach Guffey were sixth at 175 and 285, respectively.
WACO was 11th as a team at Iowa City Regina and led by senior John McLaughlin finishing fourth at 126 lbs. Sophomore Trey Edeker was also sixth at 150 for the Warriors. Lone Tree took 12th as a team and had two freshmen medal, as Brock Nebergall was the runner-up at 113 and Cole Walmsley was sixth for the Lions at 106.
