One of the best runners in Washington High School history will be continuing his career at the next level. Demon senior Micah Rees has signed his letter of intent to run both cross country and track & field at the University of Northern Iowa. Rees tells KCII Sports why there was never any doubt that he’d join the Panthers.
“[I am] very excited with my choice,” Rees says. “This is a great fit for me. I love the team. The atmosphere was great. I feel like it’s somewhere where I can help with [running] and I can get help and get pushed.”
Rees also says he’s thrilled about the opportunity to keep up what has been a stellar running career.
“From [the start of] senior year on” he says, “I started realizing that this is the last year, and I wasn’t ready to be done and [that] I could do more in this sport, and I’m excited to continue my career with UNI.”
Rees finishes his career at Washington by winning back-to-back state medals in cross country, including taking fourth place at this fall’s Class 3A state championships. Rees medaled in every race he ran over the last two seasons and helped the Demons finish fifth in the state as a team. Rees was just as good in his junior track season, qualifying for state in three different events.
