pekin-sigourney

It’s the second game in as many days for the Sigourney and Pekin basketball programs, as the two square off for a boy/girl doubleheader this afternoon in the KCII Area Game of the Week.

The Sigourney girls roll into Packwood 7-4 following a win over BGM last night 52-28. It was a relatively comfortable win for the Savages thanks to 31 combined points from Josephine Moore and Carly Goodwin. Each averages close to 10 per night for a Sigourney team averaging 43.7 per contest and allowing 32.6. The Savages are shooting 32 percent from the field, 27.8 percent from three, and 52.4 percent from the free throw line to go along with 28 rebounds, 9 assists, 9 steals, 2 blocks and 14 turnovers per game. Sigourney holds the second spot in the South Iowa Cedar East, just two games behind English Valleys.

They hit the road to battle with 4-5 Pekin. The Panthers are looking to bounce back after falling to WACO 41-35 Friday night. Anna Hadley is averaging a double-double this season and has been the pace-setter for Pekin, which collectively has a field goal percentage of 27.3, three-point percentage of 24.4, and free throw percentage of 46.1. On paper, the Panthers have the edge over Sigourney in the rebound department, pulling down 34 per night. Pekin also gets 8 assists, 7 steals, 2 blocks and 20 turnovers per game. Sigourney has won the last four matchups, including a 58-13 blowout nearly one year ago.

The Sigourney boys also opened their weekend with a win over the Bears, taking the contest 52-39. It was a three-man wrecking crew between Ike Molyneux, Solon Yates, and Isaac Bruns, who all finished in double figures. Bruns and Yates lead the way in scoring for the now 5-5 Savages this season, but a balanced attack has seen five Sigourney players with 70 or more through 10 games. Looking to climb their way up the SICL, the Savages are tied for tenth in 1A basketball with 43 blocks, and are the ninth-best in the class from the free throw line at 67.3 percent. They’re averaging more than 60 points per night and allowing about 52.

On the other end of the floor, Pekin’s boys are coming off a 53-31 loss to WACO, dropping them to 5-5 as well. A team that lives and dies by the three, the Panthers have made the tenth-most three-pointers in Class 1A with 73. Sven Dahlstrom is responsible for 29 of those, and leads Pekin in the scoring department. Averaging 54.5 points per night and allowing 50.7, the Panthers shoot better than 41 percent from the field, 34 percent from three, but just 40 percent from the line. They’ve taken eight of the last nine from the Savages, including a 56-49 win last year.
