The Washington County Sheriff’s Office and Washington Police Department kept busy this past weekend, responding to one weather-related call after another.

Heavy snow and high winds left a majority of southeast Iowa’s roadways completely covered through Saturday. Portions of I80 in Iowa and Johnson Counties were impassible as early as Friday evening. Highway 22 from Wellman to Kinross was impassable Saturday morning and was still closed through Sunday afternoon.

According to call logs, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office responded to more than 40 calls over the weekend of vehicles stuck, disabled, or abandoned. This was in addition to more than 30 citations issued in Washington for the snow ban ordinance.

The City Ordinance states that “no person shall park or leave standing any vehicle on any street within the area of the public square and extending one block each way there from”. When in effect, the ordinance prohibits downtown parking from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
