In the KCII Area Game of the Week Tuesday night, Pekin basketball went on the road to Kalona and left with a pair wins over Hillcrest Academy.
The girls kicked off the sweep with a 30-27 win in game one. Tied at four after the opening frame, Chloe Glosser jump-started the scoring for the Panthers with a pair of second-quarter threes, while Anna Hadley added five. A late Lydia Beachy three-pointer accounted for the only points in the quarter for Hillcrest, as they went into the locker room trailing by seven. Pekin was able to maintain a comfortable cushion in the second half. Hadley tacked on eight more to finish the night with 15, leading all scorers. Malia Yoder had four of her eight points in the fourth quarter, but the deficit was too much for the Ravens, who dropped to 4-12.
The Pekin boys made it a frustrating night for the Ravens as they took the second contest 51-40. The Panthers seemed primed for the sweep early in the nightcap, leading 7-0 out of the gate. Not only did Hillcrest surge back to tie, but they even took a two-point lead into the second quarter with three Seth Ours free throws. It was in the second, however, that Pekin regained momentum, shutting out the Ravens and ending the half with 12 unanswered points. Hillcrest staged several comeback attempts in the second half, but the Panthers were always quick with the answer. Pekin hit seven three-pointers on the night to just one from Hillcrest. Kasey Davis had three of them and tied Will Adam with a game-high 11 overall. Ours and Mason Bender led the Ravens with nine each. With the win, Pekin jumped now 11-5 Hillcrest for the third spot in the Superconference North.
The Ravens try to rebound this Friday in Wayland with a doubleheader against WACO.
