waco-black-2

The WACO Warriors bulldozed their way to a fourth straight boys’ basketball victory by defeating the Highland Huskies 65-23 Tuesday night. WACO had an impressive 24-2 lead in the first quarter and yet was just getting started, stretching the lead to 43-3 by halftime and never looking back.

Warriors guard Hunter Hughes had a memorable night at Riverside. In addition to scoring a game-high 16 points and picking up six steals, the senior crossed the 1,000-point mark in career scoring. Fellow senior Colton Leichty had a dominant game for WACO with 12 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists, three steals and two blocked shots.

Junior Isaac Rich had 11 points and two steals and freshman Hayden Shelman added nine points and a pair of thefts as the Warriors improve to 9-1 in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference North and 9-3 overall.

Senior forward Nic Oriano had seven points and four rebounds for Highland, while junior Logan McFarland finished with six points, five boards and two assists, but the Huskies still fall to 1-11 overall and remain winless in conference play.

While Highland is back in action tomorrow night against Wapello, WACO will be on the road tonight facing their rivals from Winfield-Mount Union.
