The KCII Area Game of the Week was back in Winfield Friday for a Superconference showdown between the Wolves and Wildcats. The doubleheader resulted in a split, with the Columbus girls and Winfield boys prevailing.
In a pair of games heard on the KCII3 Stream, the opener went to the Wildcat girls 43-37. Winfield-Mt. Union got off to a hot start, outscoring Columbus 12-6 in the first quarter. Nine of those points went to Madisen Kellogg who finished the night with a game-high 14. The Wildcats flipped the script in the second, holding the Wolves to just one field goal to head into the locker room knotted at 15. Following halftime, Columbus would take its first lead since the game’s opening minutes thanks to a steady night from Ariana Vergara, Isabel Rendon, and Frannie Sosa. The three went for 14, 13, and 10 respectively and had the Wildcats up by double-digits into the final quarter. WMU got some late production from Suttyn Schlee, Pacey Schlee, and Lilly Heckethorn, but ran out of time as Columbus earned it’s 14th win, the most for the program since 2015.
On an night where Winfield-Mt. Union celebrated its seniors, the upperclassmen for the Wolves went out on top with a dominant 76-12 win. Six of the team’s seven seniors had at least one bucket by the time the first horn sounded. Abram Edwards would lead all scorers with 15, more than half of those points coming in the opening frame. Winfield-Mt. Union saw double figures from fellow seniors Cam Buffington, Kael Johnson, Gabe Hemsworth, and Carter Loyd. Cole Milks added nine, and a late layup from Eli Miller sent the seven upperclassmen out in style. Senior Tim-Hills Carrier, who was celebrated for the Wildcats the previous night, led the way for Columbus with nine. The Wolves limited the Wildcats to just two points in the second half, as they coasted to their 12th win in a row and 14th overall.
The Columbus girls are the first group back in action on Monday with English Valleys. Winfield-Mt. Union is in Highland Tuesday for a doubleheader, and the Wildcat boys head to West Liberty on Wednesday.
