Both the Lone Tree Lions and Highland Huskies earned Southeast Iowa Super Conference victories Friday night in girls’ basketball. Lone Tree used a 20-1 run in the second quarter to blow things open against Pekin, taking a 32-11 lead into halftime and cruising from there for a 50-30 victory. The Lions stay in first place in the Super Conference North with an 11-1 mark in conference play and are 16-1 overall.
Highland had to wait until the third period for their big run against Wapello, but a 20-13 halftime advantage was tripled by a 20-4 run, and the Huskies would go on to defeat the Arrows 54-22. Highland improves to 10-2 in the Super Conference North and 13-4 in total.
The boys’ teams for both programs were not as fortunate. Lone Tree fell behind to Pekin 19-6 after a quarter of play and was kept at arm’s length the rest of the night in a 66-55 defeat. Meanwhile, Highland’s 28-6 deficit in the opening period at Wapello was too much to overcome, as despite 12 points from senior forward Nic Oriano, they took a 73-27 loss.
The Huskies are still winless in league action and drop to 1-13 overall, while the Lions fall to 2-11 in the Super Conference North and 5-12 in total. Lone Tree and Highland are meeting on the basketball court this weekend.
