The Southeast Iowa Superconference Shootout wraps up tonight on the KCII3 Stream, as the WACO boys square off with Holy Trinity Catholic, followed by Winfield-Mt. Union taking on West Burlington.
At 14-4, WACO has a stranglehold on the second spot in the Superconference North. The Warriors have won five-straight including a pair this week over Lone Tree and Moravia. WACO topped the Mohawks 70-64 in overtime, erasing a halftime deficit of 11. Chase Waterhouse and Colton Leichty combined for 35 points, each with a double-double, while Reece Oswald added 15 points and nine boards. WACO averages 63 points per game and allows 43 off 44% shooting from the floor, 24% beyond the arc, and 60% at the line. They enter tonight’s contest leading 1A in steals, and are also top-10 in rebounds.
Holy Trinity Catholic similarly sits at 14-4 and second in the South standings. A six-game winning streak propels the Crusaders to Saturday night, with wins this week over Van Buren County, Mediapolis, and Central Lee. HTC scores 62 points per game and gives up 44 with a shooting percentage of 51, three point percentage of 34, and free throw percentage of 63. The Crusaders are fifth-best in 1A with 348 assists, thanks in part to Adam Sobczak’s 149, which leads his class. Luke Hellige, meanwhile, has the seventh-most points in 1A. Tonight’s game is a rematch from the season opener when Holy Trinity bested the Warriors 59-50. Prior to that, WACO had won three straight over the Crusaders.
Winfield-Mt. Union’s boys headline the nightcap, standing strong atop the Superconference North at 15-1 and ranked fourth in 1A. The Wolves bludgeoned Columbus and Highland their last two contests by respective 76-12 and 76-15 scores. WMU is averaging a double-double out of Abram Edwards, while Cam Buffington is scoring nearly 20 points per game. The two have been a major catalyst in the team’s 64 points and 32 allowed each night. Top-ten in team assists and blocks, the Wolves are shooting 50 percent from the field, 32% from three, and 53% from the charity stripe. They’ve won 13 in a row since their lone loss to Illini Bluffs out of Illinois
West Burlington has yet to lose this season, and is in line to win the Superconference South at 15-0. Ranked 10th in 2A, the Falcons kept their perfect record in tact on Tuesday with a 65-52 win over Danville. Averaging nearly 70 points per night, West Burlington shoots just under 50% from the floor, 31% from deep, and 58% from the line. Allowing 47 a night, the Falcons also average 28 rebounds, 13 assists, nine steals, one block and nine turnovers. Winfield-Mt. Union and West Burlington were slated to play on January 22, but the game was canceled due to weather. With just six meetings since 2014, West Burlington has taken four, including the last matchup in January 2023, 66-52.
