A pair of Southeast Iowa Super Conference boys’ basketball teams were winners at the end of the week. The Columbus Wildcats picked up a 56-50 victory over the Highland Huskies Thursday night in Columbus Junction. Despite trailing by two in the first quarter, Columbus used a 20-11 run to take a 29-22 lead into halftime and would keep Highland at arm’s reach the rest of the night.
Senior Tim Hills-Carrier led the Wildcats with 20 points, 13 rebounds and four steals. Freshman Ellis Hills-Carrier also had a double-double with 16 points, 10 rebounds and five steals as Columbus improves to 4-10 in the Super Conference North and 4-14 overall. Highland remains winless in conference play and drops to 2-16 in total.
The WACO Warriors stepped out of conference Thursday night and would need overtime to get a win on the road against Moravia. After trailing by five in the opening period, WACO would find itself down 35-24 at halftime. But the Warriors rallied to get within two points heading into the final quarter and sent the game to OT tied at 58. From there, WACO used the extra session to close the game on a 12-6 run and would pull out a 70-64 win.
Chase Waterhouse had a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds to pace the Warriors, while fellow senior forward Colton Leichty also had 17 points and 12 boards. Senior Reece Oswald added 15 points and nine rebounds to help WACO raise its record to 14-4.
