The revenge tour continued for Winfield-Mt. Union boys basketball last night. Facing a Danville team that knocked them out of the postseason two years ago, the Wolves prevailed this time around 61-40.

A quick seven points from Gabe Hemsworth got Winfield-Mt. Union off to a great start, but Danville fought back to lead by one late in the first. Perhaps a turning point in the night, the Wolves turned a steal into a Carter Loyd buzzer-beating layup and a lead they would never look back from. The second quarter was when Abram Edwards stepped up, as the senior scored eight of his 15. Winfield-Mt. Union outscored Danville 22-6 in the frame to lead by 17 at the break.

The Wolves’ defense frustrated the Bears all night, holding them well below their season average. Meanwhile, Winfield’s offense kept the pedal down. Cam Buffington led all scorers with 18, and kicked off the fourth quarter with an emphatic put-back dunk. Buffington was also perfect on the night from the line. Titus Svoboda led the Bears with 15 points, but got seven of them in the fourth when the Wolves had the game in hand.

With the win, Winfield-Mt. Union plays next Tuesday for a district championship. Facing a Burlington Notre Dame they eliminated from the playoffs last season, opening tip is at 7 p.m. from Mediapolis High School.
