It’s been a phenomenal season for Winfield-Mount Union boys’ basketball, with a trip to the state tournament in the coming days adding to a top-five ranking in Class 1A and a Southeast Iowa Super Conference North championship. Now, the accolades are rolling in for their efforts on the court, including six players making all-conference.
That pack of Wolves includes Cam Buffington, who, in addition to a first-team selection, has been named the Super Conference North Player of the Year. The WMU senior was fifth in the conference in scoring and led the team by putting up over 19 points per game, but he also averaged nearly seven-and-a-half rebounds and four assists per contest.
Fellow senior Abram Edwards led the Super Conference North in rebounding while averaging almost 14.5 points and 11.5 rebounds a game on his way to another first-team all-conference selection.
Both of the Wolves’ starting guards are second-team choices. Junior Jake Edwards shot over 39 percent from beyond the three-point line on his way to nearly 10.5 points, four assists and 2.5 steals per contest. Senior Carter Loyd also makes the second team after putting up almost 8.5 points, three assists and two steals a game.
Two other Winfield-Mount Union seniors are also recognized, as Gabriel Hemsworth and Cole Milks earn honorable mentions. Head coach Klay Edwards is the Super Conference North Coach of the Year after guiding the Wolves to a record of 20-2.
WMU is gearing up to face Lynnville-Sully in the Class 1A state quarterfinals Monday afternoon. There will be a pep rally starting at 2:45 this afternoon at the high school in Winfield to celebrate the Wolves making it to state.
The community will hold a send-off as the team leaves for Des Moines at 1 o’clock Sunday afternoon. You can hear Winfield-Mount Union face Lynnville-Sully at the boys’ basketball state tournament Monday on KCII starting with pregame coverage at 11:45 a.m.
